It’s a beautiful day here in wine country. It’s also the first time, in a very long time, that I have no agenda, except to have no agenda.

I’ve escaped the hustle of my life for a weekend alone in Calistoga, CA. Home of hot springs and spa’s in the heart of Napa Valley, that is literally less than a  2 hour drive from my home.

This weekend is all about me. It’s about what I want to do, where I want to go and what I want to eat. It feels like heaven.

In a year of Covid, masks, social distancing and isolation, it feels good to see people out and about, enjoying the day.

After a morning walk around the town, I’ve decided to enjoy a leisurely lunch of crab cakes and cocktails while reading a book. A simple act that brings me such immense joy that I can barely contain myself.

You see, I realized that although I have a pretty good handle on managing my time & energy on a day to day basis, that I needed a break.

Between my personal life and my business, my mental energy was being spent faster than I could replenish it.

Have you ever watched car races like the Indianapolis 500? Cars are speeding around that track at dizzying speeds. It aways confused me when the car that was in the lead would suddenly leave the race and get off the track for a pit stop.

I would always wonder why. Isn’t he or she going to lose their first place position if they stopped for a break now? How would they be able to get their lead back, now that all of the other cars have continued on and passed them by? It’s not like they all take a break at the same time. Isn’t it going to be hard to catch to the other drivers now? As you can see, I’m full of curiosity about this.

But, here’s the thing, when you stop to service your vehicle before it breaks down, it can perform better, go faster, longer and further.

The same is true for our minds and bodies. When we take care of and service our physical, mental and emotional health, we perform better in life.

It’s not selfish, it’s necessary for high performance. Yet, most of us, myself included, fear that we’ll lose our place or fall behind somehow if we get off the track, leave the race and re-fuel our brains and bodies.

Now that I’ve spent 2 full days resting, reading, getting blissed out on full body massages and feasting on gourmet meals that I didn’t have to cook or clean up after, I know that I’ll return home and be a better wife, mom, daughter and coach for my peeps.

When you take care of yourself, everyone in your life reaps the benefits. Or, as I used to say to my kids when they were little, “If Mama ain’t happy, nobody’s happy.”

Your people will all be there, waiting to greet you and cheer you on when you re-enter the race. They know that you are setting yourself up to win!
